4 nights in the San Juan backcountry

yoga – hiking – ritual – ecosomatics

What does “kindling” mean?

What we build and create—our lives, our ideas, our relationships—rests upon the many pieces and experiences we’ve gathered along the way. The tender and the painful, the ecstatic and the quiet—they are all part of the architecture that holds us.

This retreat, named Kindling, honors those pieces. It invites us to recognize that nothing is wasted in the grand design of this self-organizing universe. Every moment has fueled who we are becoming. When we allow all of it—the beauty and the ache—to belong, we create a wider space for ourselves and for the world we inhabit.

Together, in some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the U.S., we will celebrate and tend to what has been hard, honor what has been luminous, and root ourselves within the vast, more-than-human community that holds us all.

Reignite your connection to self and land in the wild, big-sky backcountry of Telluride, Colorado. Nestled high in the San Juan Mountains, our hike-in, off-grid eco-sanctuary sits at 11,000 feet, offering a rare chance to be fully immersed in this pristine and rugged landscape.

Through daily yoga and embodied movement, soul-stirring hikes, fireside contemplation, and more starlight than you thought possible, we’ll explore both our inner and outer wilderness.

This is a rare opportunity to traverse wild, untouched terrain in one of the most sought-after wilderness areas in North America—an experience of beauty, belonging, and reverence that you’ll carry long after you descend.

“These times are urgent, let us slow down.”

BAYO AKOMOLAFE

Our Off-Grid Mountain Sanctuary

Our journey begins with a 2.5 mile moderate hike to our rustic eco-sanctuary.

This charming mountain cabin was intentionally chosen for its raw simplicity and remote wilderness location. We will be completely off-the-grid, relieved of cell service or wi-fi connection.

This is a rare opportunity to commune with the greater ecology, free from the incessant noise of our modern world. Immerse your senses in the rugged healing medicine of the ancient mountains ranges and vast starlit skies.

What to Expect

Our journey begins with a 2.5-mile hike into the backcountry lodge at 11,000 feet. Each day we’ll spend 3–5 hours on wilderness trails—moderate in terrain but made more challenging by altitude. We’ll move at a steady, spacious pace with plenty of time for rest and snacks. Arriving a day or two early to acclimate is recommended, and if your body needs a pause, you’re always welcome to stay at the lodge and enjoy the hot tub, sauna, and stillness of the mountains.

The

Accommodation

BATUKARU COFFEE ESTATE

Nestled on the south easterly slopes of Mount Batukaru, is the organic coffee estate, biodynamic farm & retreat center. Surrounded by protected jungle, our home for the week is the ideal place to escape from the hustle, reconnect with nature and savor the breathtaking views and magic of Bali.

Batukaru is worshiped by the Balinese and is home to Pura Luhur Batukaru, on of the nine directional temples in Bali. The large crater, with an opening at the southern end, allows river Mawa to flow, hence its name “Batukaru”, which means “coconut shell” in Balinese.
